Ken Devos
JEWELRY PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember.  My father, who was an aerial photographer in WWII, brought back with him a fascination with the photographic image.  He was my first teacher.

As my artistic efforts evolved, my wife, Mary An, and I began to concentrate on the use of precious metal, especially silver to create jewelry.  Part of our marketing included the sale of this jewelry at juried Art Shows.  This required the use of photographs for the jurying process. Once again my photographic background helped advance our efforts.  These photographs evolved into pictures made for our Internet web site and those of the companies for which we worked.

Many years latter, Mary Ann and I had the opportunity to write a book on the use of Precious Metal Clay in creating jewelry.  Some of the photographs used in Introduction to Precious Metal Clay were shots I had taken for advertising and marketing our jewelry.  With the success of this book, we soon were involved in writing a second, Precious Metal Clay in Mixed Media.  For this effort, I took most of the photographs.

Most recently Mary Ann and I have collaborated on a third book, for which I made the photographs for all but two pieces.  These projects all included both silver and glass, both highly reflective surfaces.  They also included pieces where the glass, usually in the form of enamel, created “windows” which transmitted light, providing areas of spectacular color if backlit.  We all are very pleased with the resulting photographs.

With the success of these and a few other photography assignments, I started to receive requests from other jewelry artists for help in photographing their work.  For some of these I have made photographs as a part of my duties as Program Coordinator at PMC Connection.  For those not connected to me through PMC Connection, I offered my services as a photographer.

As I am able, I will create a gallery of some of the pictures I created.  I hope that you enjoy them.  If you would like to discuss having me provide photographs of some of your creations, please contact me.  It usually is easiest to do that by email.  You can write to me at kendevos@aol.com.
